How Can My Organization Help Achieve the Goals of WasteWise?

Different kinds of organizations can join WasteWise, including local governments, state governments, and businesses & organizations. There is a role for individuals as well.

State and Local Governments can join WasteWise and receive access to various tools—including free technical assistance and resources to monitor and evaluate waste reduction results—to implement or expand residential waste reduction programs.

With an established relationship between State and local governments, state governments are in a unique position to encourage communities to join the WasteWise program. A statewide waste reduction program could result in higher participation rates because communities can share resources and work together. In conjunction, states might be interested in hosting an awards program or facilitating a competition between municipalities, holding regional networking meetings, or providing outreach materials. Additional benefits include: national recognition opportunities; a forum to allow municipal Partners to network and learn directly from one another; and individualized Climate Profiles that provide WasteWise Partners with information on the community’s individual greenhouse gas emission reduction efforts.

Businesses and Organizations interested in reducing their own waste stream and waste in their communities can join WasteWise and become a Partner. In addition to their in-house efforts, Partners can encourage their local government to join WasteWise and help spread the waste reduction message through outreach and education to their employees and other businesses. EPA will provide information and WasteWise materials as part of this effort.

Individuals can encourage their community to join WasteWise through volunteer efforts in an educational setting or a solid waste facility, or to assist other residents in their waste reduction efforts. Individuals are not eligible to join WasteWise, but their support is needed and appreciated.
